White Tail the Deer's Adventures

The forest holds secrets for those patient enough to learn them. White Tail, a young deer with soft new antlers and restless legs, is about to discover what it means to carry the weight of his father's legacy. Father Buck has led the herd through countless seasons, but his legs aren't what they used to be, and the other deer have noticed. At Stepping Stone brook, White Tail faces his first true test: a leap across rushing water that will mark him as either a follower or a future leader. With his father's steady voice urging him forward, he runs, jumps, and lands on the far bank, breathless and changed. But the victory is bittersweet. Father Buck watches his son and sees the inevitable: the young will inherit what the old must surrender. This is a story about the first moments of courage, the ache of watching someone you love grow too old, and the ancient compact between generations that says the forest will endure because the children leap when their parents can no longer fly.
