Wanderings in Spain

Théophile Gautier arrives in Spain the way a poet discovers a new sense: desperate, devouring, newly awake. Writing for La Presse in 1840, this French Romantic makes no pretense of objectivity. He falls in love with bullfights, with the white villages of Andalusia, with the passionate chaos of Spanish life. His Spain is not the Spain of guidebooks but of sensation and color. What unfolds is less a travelogue than a love affair conducted in real time. Gautier catalogs everything, the stench of garlic in Seville, the gypsies in Granada's caves, the grave dignity of Spanish women, with the intensity of a man discovering the world for the first time. His wit cuts sharp when mocking French tourists, yet his descriptions of Cordoba's mosque or the mountains of Aragon shimmer with genuine awe. This is Spain before modernity transformed it, preserved in prose that still feels electric. For readers who want travel writing with a pulse, someone passionate, opinionated, and vivid as a companion, Gautier is that rare guide who makes you ache to go somewhere you've never been.
