Vagabond Adventures

At eleven years old, Ralph Keeler decided he'd had enough. This is his account of what happened next: a picaresque journey through the American Midwest and rivers of the 1860s, where a fatherless boy with no money and no prospects reinvents himself again and again. He hops freight trains, signs onto steamboats as a cabin boy, befriends rough companions and harder obstacles, and discovers that freedom tastes both exhilarating and hollow. What elevates Keeler's memoir beyond typical boy-roving-adventure tales is his frank, self-aware humor. He interrogates his own youthful vanities and romantic notions even as he lives them, creating a voice that feels remarkably modern despite the nineteenth-century setting. The book captures a transitional American moment, the post-Civil War years and rough democracy of river life, through the eyes of someone too young to fully understand what he's witnessing but old enough to remember everything.
