Under the Flag of France: A Tale of Bertrand Du Guesclin

The boy the world called ugly would become the sword of France. Bertrand du Guesclin is fourteen, unwanted, and convinced the world would be better without him. In the misty hills of Brittany, the son of a noble house endures his family's scorn and the cruel laughter of his peers. His body is made for labor, not chivalry; his face, they say, belongs in a forge. But destiny has different eyes. When a wandering song catches his ear and a simpleton's cry splits the night, Bertrand discovers what he was born for: not the acceptance he craves, but the violence that will forge him into a legend. A monk speaks of greatness waiting. Wolves circle. The Hundred Years' War is coming, and France will need every sword it can find. Written in 1908, this is the education of a hero in the raw: before the battles, before the legend, when a bullied boy still had something to prove. For readers who love medieval history, underdog transformations, and the idea that the world underestimates the wrong people.
