Under the Dragon Flag: My Experiences in the Chino-Japanese War

In 1894, a young Scottish man with a squandered inheritance and nothing left to lose met a drunken sailor in a Liverpool pub. That chance encounter shipped him straight into the Sino-Japanese War, one of the most consequential conflicts you've never heard of. James Allan's memoir captures something no official history can: the raw, bewildered perspective of an ordinary sailor swept up in a war that would reshape East Asia and announce Japan's arrival as a modern power. Allan chronicles his transformation from idle rich to war supply runner with frank, often self-deprecating honesty. He and his rough companion Charles Webster navigate storm-battered waters, dodge hostile ships, and witness firsthand the brutal realities of a conflict between a rising Japan and a crumbling Qing dynasty. This isn't military strategy or diplomatic history it's the intimate, sometimes absurd experience of a young man who simply stumbled into the edge of empire. The book endures because it captures empire at a turning point, told through eyes that didn't understand the stakes but felt them anyway. For readers who loved naval adventure narratives, or anyone curious about the personal voices behind the history we rarely hear.
