Uncle Wiggily's Fortune
1913
In 1913, Howard Roger Garis introduced generations of young readers to Uncle Wiggily Longears, a kindly rabbit who walks upright, wears a gentlemanly suit, and possesses the sort of cheerful determination that makes obstacles merely things to be overcome. This particular volume finds our white-furred protagonist waking in his hollow stump after a rainstorm, sore from a recent scrape with a wolf but undeterred in his quest to find the fortune he believes awaits him beyond the forest edge. Armed with a toadstool umbrella and a satchel of carrot sandwiches, he sets out across the countryside, where adventures await: a sly fox to outwit, a rushing river to cross, a dark cave to navigate. Along the way, he collects friends like Mappo the monkey and Johnnie Bushytail the bear, each adding warmth and humor to his journey. What makes Uncle Wiggily enduring is not the fortune itself but the gentle philosophy behind the quest: that optimism, kindness, and persistence are rewards enough, and that the real treasure lies in the friends made and the lessons learned along the way. Perfect for readers who prefer their adventures soft-spoken and their heroes kindly.
