To the Highest Bidder

To the Highest Bidder

Florence Morse Kingsley

1911

In the small village of Barford, six-year-old Jimmy Preston celebrates his birthday with dreams of buying his sister Barbara a gift, unaware that their family farm hangs by a thread. Barbara works the land alone after their father's death, fighting to keep a roof over their heads while a man named Stephen Jarvis tightens the noose of their mortgage. Jarvis sees opportunity in their desperation, offering Barbara an unbearable choice: marry him and save the farm, or lose everything. What follows is a story of sacrifice, survival, and the terrible mathematics of poverty in early twentieth-century rural America. Kingsley writes with fierce compassion about the impossible choices facing women of her era, when a family's home could be lost to a single missed payment and a woman's body became the final currency. The bond between Barbara and Jimmy grounds the novel in genuine tenderness even as darker forces close in.
