Those Who Smiled, and Eleven Other Stories

Twelve stories of empire, war, and the quiet resistances of the human spirit. The title novella introduces Captain Hahn and Lieutenant Jovannic, two officers tracking a deserter through a village under occupation. What begins as a manhunt becomes something stranger: the officers expect fear, pleading, resistance. Instead they find villagers who smile, who meet violence with a composure that unsettles more than any revolt could. Gibbon, writing in 1920 with the war still fresh in memory, examines the mechanics of authority and the unfathomable dignity of those who endure it. The remaining eleven stories range across colonial frontiers and remote outposts, each one a small chamber of moral tension. Gibbon writes with sharp, spare prose that recalls Conrad at his most economical. These are stories about the moment when power realizes it has miscalculated, when the predictable responses fail and something more unsettling takes their place. For readers who prize short fiction that refuses to comfort.
