The Second Class Passenger: Fifteen Stories

The second class passenger exists in perpetual in-between: not quite the privilege of first class, not the desperation of steerage, always looking up or down. This is where Perceval Gibbon's characters live, in the liminal spaces of early twentieth-century empire. Merchants and missionaries, sailors and seductists, colonial functionaries and the indigenous populations navigating around them: all caught between what they're told the world should be and what it actually is. The opening story finds Dawson wandering rain-slicked Mozambique streets on a simple errand, retrieving a bronze idol for a travel companion, only to blunder into violence that demands he choose between witness and participant. This sets the tone for fifteen tales where social boundaries crack under pressure, where the color of money and power determines who survives the night. Gibbon writes with sharp, unsentimental precision about what happens when civilized people encounter the uncivilized parts of themselves. These are stories for readers who want fiction that refuses easy morality and delivers genuine stakes in exotic, perfectly rendered locales.
