The Young Surveyor; Or, Jack on the Prairies

The prairies of Northern Illinois in the 19th century were wide open spaces where a young man could lose himself or find himself. Jack arrives at the home of landowner Mr. Wiggett to help locate a lost section corner, but what he finds is something larger: the uncertain terrain of becoming a man. Armed with surveying equipment and more enthusiasm than experience, he must navigate not just the untamed land but the colorful personalities of rural America. There's Mr. Wiggett himself, his family, a lively dog, and the everyday quirks of frontier folk who make their own rules. As Jack measures the land and his own capabilities, every marker he places becomes a test of competence and character. This is adventure with real stakes: the stakes of growing up, of proving yourself, of earning your place in a world that doesn't slow down for beginners. Trowbridge writes with warmth and humor about the small dramas of frontier life, capturing a moment in American history when the land was still being measured and so were the people who claimed it.
