The Yeoman Adventurer

Oliver Wheatman is a yeoman whose life has been circumscribed by muddy fields and small ambitions, but when he witnesses soldiers marching toward the Jacobite rising of 1745, something inside him ignites. His chance comes in the form of Mistress Margaret Waynflete, a woman whose involvement in the Stuart cause draws her into deadly peril. What begins as an act of rescue becomes a thrilling entanglement with rebellion, violence, and a love that crosses dangerous lines. Gough renders 18th-century England with tactile immediacy:the texture of cottages, the weight of political fear, the particular ache of wanting more from life than your station seems to allow. Oliver is no hero of noble birth; he's a farmer's son who must find courage he doesn't know he possesses, in a world being torn apart by forces far greater than himself. The novel delivers what adventure stories do best: the promise that an ordinary person, when tested, might prove extraordinary.
