The Tale of Tom Kitten

The Tale of Tom Kitten

Beatrix Potter

1907

Three little kittens, dressed in their Sunday best, are told to stay clean while their mother prepares for a tea party. Within moments, Tom and his sisters have scrambled over a garden wall, lost their buttons and coats to a passing Puddle-Duck, and landed in a glorious muddle. This is Beatrix Potter at her most mischievous, capturing the universal childhood experience of being told to be careful and immediately doing the exact opposite. The illustrations are impossibly tender, the kittens plump and serious in their tiny jackets, their downfall rendered with gentle comedic precision. Potter understood something essential about little creatures: they are刚刚 learning the rules, and breaking them is half the fun. The tale concludes with mother Tabitha Twitchit furiously fibbing to her guests that her disheveled children have come down with the measles, while the kittens thunder overhead, reducing her carefully ordered parlor to delightful chaos. Over a century later, Tom Kitten remains a perfect picture book, read aloud to generations of children who recognize themselves immediately in those three naughty, wide-eyed faces.
