The Story of Grettir the Strong

Grettir the Strong is cursed with ørlög, the terrible luck that haunts his family line, and from his violent childhood onward, he cannot stop himself from fighting, killing, and making enemies. He becomes Iceland's most famous outlaw, roaming the island with his axe and his sword, battling berserker warriors, draugar (the walking dead), and trolls in a landscape where the supernatural bleeds into the legal disputes of medieval farming communities. Yet for all his strength, Grettir is also a poet, a lover, and a man perpetually isolated from the family bonds that might have saved him. This saga crackles with scathing humor, brutal action, and an unexpected melancholy: here is a man who knows his fate is sealed but cannot stop reaching for the light anyway.
