The Story of a White Rocking Horse
1920
This 1920 children's classic imagines what happens in a department store after the lights go out, when toys come alive with secrets and adventures of their own. At its heart is a charming white rocking horse who longs for companionship and excitement beyond his display shelf. He befriends an elephant on roller skates, endures the cruelty of a rude boy who mistreats him, and finally finds redemption when a kind boy named Dick receives him as a Christmas gift. Together they face burglars, misadventures, and a joyful grass party that seals their bond. The book captures something timeless: the magic children instinctively know, that beloved toys have inner lives, that loyalty and kindness are rewarded. It speaks to every child who whispered to stuffed animals and believed the impossible. For readers seeking nostalgic comfort or the gentle fantasy of toys with hearts, this remains a sweet testament to childhood imagination.
