The Silver Shield: An Original Comedy in Three Acts

In this sprightly Victorian comedy, painter Tom Potter has a canvas and a plan: win Lucy Preston before anyone notices he's also penniless. But Lucy's guardian Sir Humphrey Chetwynd has eyes only for his own son's reformation, and Ned Chetwynd seems far too interested in Lucy for a young man supposedly bound for respectability. Into this coiled situation strides Alma Blake, a woman whose mysterious past and effortless charm upend every carefully laid scheme. What follows is a delightful whirligig of mistaken identities, hidden affections, and the kind of witty verbal sparring that made 1890s London theater audiences roar. Grundy proves himself a sharp observer of the rituals that govern love and money, showing how a Silver Shield of respectable appearance can hide very human vulnerabilities beneath. The play endures because its comedy still cuts true: the anxiety of proposals, the tyranny of guardians, and the way we all perform versions of ourselves hoping someone will like the real thing.
