A Fool's Paradise: An Original Play in Three Acts

The title is the clue: this is a comedy of romantic self-deception where everyone believes they understand the game, and nearly everyone is playing it wrong. Philip Selwyn presents himself as a man of comfortable domesticity, married to the accomplished Beatrice, yet carries a secret affliction that shapes every interaction and reveals the fragility beneath Victorian certainty. His sister Mildred is courted by the earnest but easily duped Tom Verinder, while Sir Peter Lund, the family physician, finds himself drawn into a household where humor masks deeper wounds. Grundy, a sharp wit of the late 19th-century stage, constructs a comedy of manners that doubles as a quiet tragedy of illusions. The play endures because it shows us how thoroughly we can fool ourselves about love, duty, and what we actually owe the people closest to us.
