The Shipwreck: A Story for the Young

This early 20th-century children's adventure story opens in colonial Hong Kong, where two schoolboys, Willy and his Chinese friend Joseph, find themselves drifting toward trouble. Willy's rebellious spirit leads him to disobey his teacher, setting in motion a chain of events that will test his friendship with Joseph and place both boys in grave danger. When Willy learns of his father's death, he is left in the care of his uncle, Captain Brown, a man whose villainy runs deeper than the ocean waters they soon sail. The boys find themselves aboard the St. George, where Captain Brown's true intentions emerge, they are passengers on a ship heading toward disaster, manipulated by a man who sees them as mere pawns in his schemes. As treachery unfolds at sea, Willy and Joseph must draw on their courage and loyalty to survive. The book carries its era's moral sensibility, using disobedience as a cautionary element while celebrating the resilience of friendship in the face of genuine peril.
