Before geology had a name, Thomas Burnet dared to write the Earth's biography. Published in 1719, this audacious treatise attempts something no earlier author had attempted: a systematic explanation of the planet's origins, catastrophes, and future transformations, drawn from both biblical narrative and careful observation of the natural world. Burnet argues that the Earth was once a smoother, more perfect sphere, that the Deluge was precipitated by internal fires that shattered the planet's crust, and that our present mountains and continents are scars from that primordial catastrophe. He extends his theory forward as well, speculating on the Earth's ultimate conflagration and renewal. This is proto-science at its most ambitious and strange - a work that influenced Newton, helped birth the geological sciences, and remains a fascinating document of Enlightenment thinking grappling with questions we still ask: How old is the Earth? What cataclysms shaped it? What will become of it? For readers curious about the history of ideas, the birth of Earth science, or the strange beautiful theories that preceded modern knowledge, Burnet's text remains strangely vital - a window into a mind attempting to read the secrets written in stone.
