The Rat Racket

The Rat Racket, written by David H. Keller in the early 20th century, is a crime fiction short story that delves into the rise of racketeering in a bustling metropolis. The narrative follows Richard Moyer and Paul Perkins, grocery store owners who are threatened by a gang demanding 'protection' from rats. As the situation escalates, they become entangled in a web of fear and extortion, leading to dire consequences for their community. The arrival of Winifred Willowby offers a potential solution, but the outcome reveals the dangers of greed and underestimating adversaries.
