Three friends from the Rambler Club arrive in Canada's Northwest Territories expecting a summer adventure. Instead, they find their friend Jed Warren missing, accused of desertion from the Royal Northwest Mounted Police, and the barrack gates slammed shut on their questions. Bob Somers and his companions refuse to accept that their friend has abandoned his post. With Sergeant Jarvis Erskine secretly sympathetic but unable to act officially, and Teddy Banes, a half-breed scout, as their unlikely guide, the boys push deeper into the wilderness than any city boys should go, chasing rumors of smugglers and cattle rustlers through landscapes of brutal beauty. The tension mounts as they realize the truth behind Jed's disappearance may be far more dangerous than a simple misunderstanding. This is early twentieth-century juvenile adventure at its most entertaining: a story about loyalty tested, courage found, and the stubborn refusal to believe the worst of someone you love.
