The Prairie Schooner

The Prairie Schooner, written in the early 20th century by William Francis Hooker, is a historical account of life during the westward expansion of the United States. It focuses on the experiences of bullwhackers, teamsters who navigated ox-drawn freight trains across the plains, highlighting the harsh realities of frontier life, including interactions with native tribes and the challenges posed by nature. The narrative begins with letters between old friends, reflecting on their adventurous pasts and setting the stage for a vivid depiction of a transformative era before the establishment of railroads.
