Gustave Aimard wrote from hard experience. The Frenchman sailed at twelve, spent years living among Native American tribes in what would become the American Southwest, then transformed those memories into adventure novels that set Europe on fire. This sequel to "The Trail Hunter" drops readers into the sun-bleached territories around Santa Fe and Texas in the 1850s, when these lands still answered to Mexico. The plot tracks the scoundrel Red Cedar across the desert, a wanted man with Dona Clara in his wake, while trackers, trappers, and tribal nations close in behind him. Aimard renders the Southwest as a place of brutal beauty: hidden water holes, sudden ambushes, Apache and Comanche warriors whose methods the author describes with the uncomfortable precision of someone who witnessed them firsthand. The novel teems with frontier types, scalp hunters, wood rangers, bandits, and the indigenous peoples caught between conquest and survival. It is very much a product of its era, reflecting the prejudices of mid-19th century colonial literature, but it also preserves a strange authenticity: Aimard knew this world, and his wild prose captures the texture of a frontier where every sunrise might be your last.
