The Outdoor Girls Around the Campfire; or, The Old Maid of the Mountains

Summer 1910s. Four friends Betty, Grace, Mollie, and Amy venture into the wild expecting a cozy lakeside shack. Instead, they find ashes where the cabin should be, and only their nerve and friendship stand between them and the untamed mountains. The girls pitch their tents anyway, refusing to let a burned-down shelter ruin their adventure. But as darkness falls over Rainbow Lake, something prowls at the edges of their camp, and the girls must decide whether to flee or face whatever stalks the tree line. Between mysterious nocturnal sounds and the romantic tangle of Betty's absent sweetheart Allen, who is tangled up in a dying client's will drama, the vacation becomes a test of courage neither她们 nor their readers expected. This is early juvenile adventure at its finest: plucky heroines who solve their own problems, a hint of danger to quicken the pulse, and the open road of a world where young women were just beginning to claim independence.
