The Mistake of Christopher Columbus

The year is 1491. A reclusive Australian astronomer named Herbert Fitzgrone has calculated an impossible truth: the world is flat, and Columbus is about to sail off its edge. When he attempts to warn the Spanish Crown, he finds himself battling not just the established scholars but an entire worldview wired to reject any truth that threatens power and precedent. Jules Archer's brilliant 1952 satire imagines an upside-down world where the flat-earthers are right and the round-earth conspirators control the institutions. It's a razor-sharp Cold War critique of how scientific authority becomes dogma, how consensus erects barriers to reality, and how anyone who challenges the accepted narrative becomes the enemy of society. The humor crackles with period-specific wit while addressing questions that feel urgently modern: who decides what's true, and what happens when the experts are wrong?
