The Man in the Reservoir

A young man's fishing expedition at New York City's Distributing Reservoir takes a nightmarish turn when he finds himself submerged in the dark water, unable to climb out. Trapped in the cold and isolation, he begins a feverish inventory of his life: his humble circumstances, his unrequited longing for a girl named Mary, and the cruel mathematics of mortality that have kept him from pursuing her. What begins as a simple fishing trip becomes a psychological ordeal, a darkly comic meditation on loneliness and desire played out against the strange, urban wilderness of the reservoir. Hoffman tempers the existential dread with wry humor, finding absurdity in the protagonist's realization that the very fish he sought to catch might be his unlikely salvation. The story captures a particular 19th-century American anxiety about ambition, love, and the crushing weight of one's own insignificance, all wrapped in a premise as strange and memorable as any in early American fiction.
