The Maid of the Whispering Hills

In the untamed wilderness of the late 18th century, where the fur trade draws the desperate and the daring to its remote outposts, a woman refuses to be tamed. Maren Le Moyne arrives at Fort de Seviere with rumors trailing behind her like winter smoke, some say she's running from something, others say she's running toward something no one else dares to seek: the open western frontier. She meets young Anders McElroy, the factor struggling to hold the fort together through sheer will, and finds herself tangled in a world where kindness is a luxury and courage means small, defiant acts. The novel opens with a visceral scene: a woman standing between a cruel trapper and his battered dog, daring anyone to look away. This is the moral arithmetic of the frontier. Vingie E. Roe wrote this in 1912, but she understood something ancient about wilderness life: civilization and savagery wear each other's faces. The book endures because it captures a woman carving her own destiny in a world that insists she has none. It is for readers who love historical fiction that cracks open the past with fierce, unsentimental heart.
