The Lure of the Mississippi

Spring 1861. The Civil War erupts and the frontier trembles. Colonel John C. Pemberton marches his troops away from Fort Ridgely toward Washington, leaving a vacuum that the Dakota Sioux see as their chance to reclaim stolen lands. Into this powder keg steps young Tim and Bill Ferguson, two brothers whose journey aboard the steamship Fanny Harris becomes a descent into violence and revelation. Navigating the flooded Minnesota River, they encounter weathered frontiersmen and a Sioux scout named Tatanka whose loyalties remain deliciously unclear. The river itself becomes a character: swollen, dangerous, indifferent to the human turmoil along its banks. What begins as an adventure for the boys quickly hardens into a test of survival where the enemy is not simply the Sioux, but the chaotic collision of cultures, the brutal mathematics of war, and the terrible opportunities that arise when empires crumble. The Lure of the Mississippi captures a forgotten corner of American history where the Civil War and Native American resistance intersected, told through the innocent eyes of two boys forced to grow up fast.
