The Last Straw

The Last Straw, written by Harold Titus in the early 20th century, follows Jane Hunter, the new owner of a struggling ranch in the West. As she attempts to navigate the challenges of ranch management and earn the respect of local cowhands in a male-dominated environment, Jane's determination is tested. The story highlights her clash of idealism against the harsh realities of ranch life, particularly through her unconventional method of selecting a foreman by drawing straws. This novel is notable for its portrayal of a strong female protagonist in a traditional Western setting.
