The Last Dragon

In a meadow beside a mysterious wood, three children stage Arthurian games until six-year-old Peter wanders into a cave and awakens something extraordinary: a gentle green dragon with blue eyes, the last of his kind, who has slumbered for centuries. What begins as a forbidden friendship becomes something far stranger when the dragon carries the children and their intrepid grandmother backwards through time itself, passing through the Dark Ages toward an ancient volcano where he must "eat fire" to survive. But the dragon's cave holds more secrets: a prickly cave-gnome named Crubby reveals that the dragon's beloved companion, Princess Silver Toes, has been stolen by the Irish dragon Dallahan. Armed with mail and swords from a roadside armorer, the children, their grandmother, and even the dogs set off on a quest through a world where magic still breathes. This 1927 fantasy carries the strange, wistful quality of a world where dragons are real but fading, where courage comes in small packages, and where the past is something you can ride like the wind.
