The Journal of a Voyage to Lisbon

The Journal of a Voyage to Lisbon is the final work of Henry Fielding, written in 1754 during a difficult period marked by illness. This travel narrative chronicles his journey to Lisbon aboard the Queen of Portugal, blending autobiographical reflection with social commentary. Fielding employs humor and irony to critique both his own declining health and the societal norms of 18th-century England, while drawing parallels to classical epic journeys. The journal was published posthumously in January 1755 and offers a poignant insight into the author's life as he confronts mortality.
