The History of Thomas Hickathrift

Before superhero movies and fantasy epics, there were chapbooks: small, cheap pamphlets that held the dreams of ordinary people. Thomas Hickathrift is one of English folklore's greatest unsung heroes, a man who begins as a slothful laborer in the Fens and ends as a legend. When a monstrous giant terrorizes the marshland of the Isle of Ely, this lazy giant of a man must find the courage to stand between the creature and his people. What follows is a rousing tale of transformation, as Thomas discovers that strength means nothing without conviction, and that sometimes the greatest hero is the one who simply refuses to let evil win. The story crackles with folk humor and episodic adventure: wrestling matches, encounters with thieves, battles against tyranny. The prose has the roughness and warmth of a tale told around a fire, passed down through generations before being printed in those cheap, beloved chapbooks. This is English folklore at its most essential: a working-class champion, a marshland kingdom, and the enduring belief that ordinary people can do extraordinary things.
