The God Next Door

Stinson comes to a desert world expecting to chart a new frontier for human colonization. What he finds is a trap of meaning he never set. The web-footed inhabitants see his technology and recognize a god. A woman insists she has always been his wife. And in the dunes, the Sand God waits. Stinson becomes simultaneously savior, threat, and prisoner to a role he never auditioned for. The novel's genuine power lies in its wrestling with power without wisdom, with being worshipped for accidentally being in the right place at the wrong time. The alien world becomes a mirror for something uncomfortably human: our capacity to make gods out of strangers, to need the extraordinary to explain the inexplicable. Early 1960s sci-fi at its most ambitiously philosophical, asking what we owe those who see us as divine when we know we are merely human.
