A City Near Centaurus

An archaeologist from Earth lands on Alpha Centaurus II expecting to catalog ruins. Instead, he finds a city still guarded by one of its original inhabitants, a being who treats his scientific curiosity as a form of desecration. Michaelson sees a civilization frozen in time, ripe for study and preservation. Maota sees sacred ground where ancestral spirits still walk. Their mutual incomprehension escalates into something neither expects: a collision of ontologies that forces both to question what it means to exist, to know, to honor the past. Doede's slim 1962 novel is less interested in the mechanics of interstellar travel than in the existential shock of encountering a worldview that cannot be assimilated into your own. It asks whether two beings can ever truly understand each other when their fundamental assumptions about reality are incompatible. The answer is neither comforting nor bleak, which is precisely what makes it linger.
