The Empire Makers: A Romance of Adventure and War in South Africa

Three young men. One continent on the edge of war. Ned Romer, school captain and adventurer at heart, convinces his friends Clarence Raybold and Fred Weldon to seek their fortunes in South Africa. Fred, still raw from his father's death, throws himself into the plan as escape and rebirth. What begins as a boy's dream of exploration quickly collides with the brutal machinery of empire: the tensions between British colonists and Boer republics are reaching flashpoint, and the friends will find that adventure in Africa demands more than courage. Hume Nesbit writes with the breathless energy of a writer who believed empire was both destiny and destiny's adventure, capturing a moment when Britain stood at the zenith of its imperial confidence and the first cracks were appearing in the edifice. This is a period piece, filtered through the assumptions of its era, but it offers a vivid window into how Edwardian Britons imagined Africa: as a stage for youth, ambition, and the assertion of will. For readers interested in late-Victorian adventure fiction and the cultural mindset that produced the Second Boer War.
