The Discovery of Guiana

In 1595, Sir Walter Raleigh sailed a small flotilla into the heart of Spain's South American empire, threading up the Orinoco River in search of a city of gold that haunted the European imagination. The Discoverie of Guiana is his account of that audacious expedition: part meticulous travelogue, part breathless conjecture, part calculated pitch for Elizabethan patronage. Raleigh had no royal backing, no army, just ambition and a hunch. He encountered indigenous peoples, mapped unfamiliar geography, and returned with fragments of gold and stories of a legendary kingdom called Manoa, ruled by a priest-king who covered himself in gold dust. The book is unreliable history and unforgettable storytelling rolled into one. Raleigh was a poet as much as an explorer, and his prose shimmers with the conviction that greatness still awaited discovery in the unknown world. Whether El Dorado ever existed remains contested. What remains indisputable is that Raleigh believed in it completely, and in this account, he makes you believe it too.
