She was the wife of Robert Louis Stevenson, but she was no typical literary spouse. Her diary documents three months sailing through the Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Kiribati, and the Marshall Islands aboard a ship crewed by forty islanders and seven white men, with her husband and grown son beside her. What makes this account extraordinary is Stevenson's eye for the unexpected: fireworks stored improperly triggering a shipboard fire, negotiations with local traders, the daily rhythms of life among islands on the edge of colonial transformation.
