The Cruise of the Gyro-Car
1911
It's 1911. The automobile is still a marvel. Two brothers, one experimental gyro-car, and a shadowy Russian count determined to stop them. When Maurice Buckland returns to England from a posting in Sofia, Bulgaria, he finds his younger brother George has been busy in the workshop, not with studies, but with a wildly ambitious project: a car stabilized by gyroscope, a technological marvel that could revolutionize travel. The gyro-car's dramatic debut becomes something of a disaster. But their real trouble begins when they discover Count Slavianski, a Russian agent, has been shadowing them across Europe. What follows is a breathless race from England through the Alps and into the wild mountains of Albania, where the brothers must use every ounce of ingenuity and courage to stay one step ahead of their pursuers. Herbert Strang, writing at the height of Edwardian optimism about technology and empire, delivers a rollicking adventure that blends mechanical invention, spy intrigue, and the open road. Perfect for readers who loved The Adventures of Tom Sawyer but wished it had more international espionage and early automotive thrills.
