The Chasers
Two astronauts crash on a world that defies every law of civilization. The natives possess spaceships but lack basic technology. They speak but do not write. And every day, without exception, they organize massive chases across the planet, running from each other with a fervor that borders on religious devotion. Kent Cassidy and Gene Mason must repair their ship while making sense of a society where play has replaced productivity as the highest value. Their attempts to escape become increasingly hilarious as they get drawn deeper into the locals' bewildering customs, particularly the eccentric Riva and her father. The novel poses an uncomfortable question: what if we've been measuring progress all wrong? For readers who enjoy deliberately strange science fiction that prioritizes philosophical provocation over conventional plotting, or who appreciate the cult appeal of eccentric 1960s sci-fi.
