The Casual Ward: Academic and Other Oddments

The humor here is precise, academic, and thoroughly British. Godley writes as if Latin orations and scholarly debates were matters of life and death, then reveals them to be absurd. The opening piece imagines Cicero arguing against banning bicycles from the Bodleian Library, written in impeccable mock-classical style. That's the whole game: treating the mundane ridiculousness of academic bureaucracy with the gravity of a state funeral. These essays skewer the pomposity of university life, the absurdity of rules meant to be broken, and the strange creatures who inhabit scholarly institutions. Godley had the rare gift of being genuinely funny without being mean. He loved Oxford enough to mock it. The pieces range from historical oddities to pure satire, all delivered in a voice that feels like a witty professor who never stopped being delighted by language. If you've ever worked in academia, or just enjoy watching clever people be silly, there's genuine pleasure here.
