The Brownies and Prince Florimel; Or, Brownieland, Fairyland, and Demonland

Palmer Cox

Adventure, Children & Young Adult Reading, Science-Fiction & Fantasy

In the vanishing kingdom of Glenmore, Prince Florimel stands barely taller than a garden gnome but possesses something far more valuable than height: the second sight, granted by his fairy godmother, and a bow that never misses its mark. After his father's death, his wicked uncle the Duke seizes the throne and hunts the boy across the realm. Fleeing through ancient forests, Florimel stumbles into Brownieland, where the diminutive Brownies take him in as one of their own. From there, he must journey between three worlds, the rustic charm of Brownieland, the glittering court of Fairyland, and the shadowed realm of Demonland, to reclaim his birthright. This is early 20th-century fairy tale at its most enchanting: a boy's courage against treachery, the warmth of found family among magical folk, and the ancient belief that kindness and smallness can triumph over cruelty and power. Readers who crave gentle fantasy with real stakes, who remember the thrill of discovering a hidden world behind the garden gate, will find themselves at home in Brownieland.
