The Brownie Scouts in the Circus
1949
The Brownie Scouts need money for a camping trip, and they've only got weeks to raise it. When a circus poster catches their eye, the girls hatch a plan: they'll stage their own show, complete with acts, tickets, and plenty of chaos. Veve McGuire has an extra problem - she has no Brownie uniform and no money for her share of the trip. If the circus is going to happen, everyone must pull their weight. The troop scrambles through rehearsals, ticket drives, and the inevitable mishaps that happen when a group of determined girls tries to run a circus. Then Veve and fellow Scout Connie find themselves locked inside a circus train car, trapped in the dark with nothing but their nerve and each other. First published in 1949, this is mid-century childhood at its finest - earnest, inventive, and fueled by the conviction that resourceful kids can accomplish anything when they work together. It speaks to anyone who remembers the particular thrill of a childhood adventure where the stakes felt enormous and friendship was the real prize.
