The Boys of Crawford's Basin: The Story of a Mountain Ranch in the Early Days of Colorado

The real Colorado frontier, not the Hollywood version. Author Sidford F. Hamp actually lived in Colorado Springs and traveled with the 1872 Hayden Geological Survey to Yellowstone, and that firsthand knowledge pulses through every page of this 1907 adventure. When a massive grizzly bear called Big Reuben starts raiding their pig-pen, young brothers Phil and Joe must prove themselves against the most dangerous predator in the Rockies. The boys join their father in defending the ranch, showcasing the quick thinking and courage that frontier life demanded. Beyond the bear, the story follows the brothers as they work the mountain ranch, encounter wildlife, try their hand at prospecting, and learn what it means to build a life in a rugged, unforgiving land. Hamp writes with the authority of someone who knew these mountains intimately, painting the Colorado landscape as both beautiful and lethal. It's a window into a world that existed for only a brief moment in American history, told through the eyes of two boys becoming men in one of the wildest places on the continent. For readers who want their adventure with a layer of authenticity, who want to feel the altitude and smell the pine.
