The Boy's Hakluyt: English Voyages of Adventure and Discovery

Set sail with the Elizabethan explorers who first dared to cross the Atlantic in search of new lands, new trade routes, and new fortunes. This 1909 volume distills the extraordinary accounts recorded by Richard Hakluyt, the great chronicler of English maritime adventure, into a gripping narrative for young readers. The story begins in 1582, when Hakluyt published his revolutionary pamphlet 'Divers Voyages' aimed at spurring England to claim its place in the New World. From there, Bacon recounts the doomed expedition of Sir Humphrey Gilbert, who perished at sea in 1583 but left behind the dream of colonization, to the legendary voyages of Sir Walter Raleigh and his ill-fated Roanoke colony, where 117 English men, women, and children vanished without a trace. These are tales of bravery, hubris, tragedy, and the relentless human urge to see what lies beyond the horizon. For any child who has ever stared at a map and wondered what lies across the ocean, this book answers that call with stories of real adventurers who answered it first.
