The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night — Volume 07 (of 10)
Translated by Richard Francis, Sir Burton
A queen bets her life on the power of a story. This is the audacious premise at the heart of the collection that shaped modern fiction: Shahrazad, condemned to die by King Shahryar, postpones her execution night after night by weaving tales so mesmerizing that the king must hear how they end. Volume VII plunges into the epic rivalry between King Gharib and his treacherous brother Ajib, a saga of warfare, betrayal, and capture that unfolds with the propulsive momentum of the best adventure fiction. But within this tale and the countless others nested within it, you will also find Aladdin and his enchanted lamp, Ali Baba and his forty thieves, Sinbad's impossible voyages. Burton's legendary translation captures not just the stories but the texture of a world: all-powerful sorcerers, jinns imprisoned in bottles, princesses both enchanting and deadly, plus a healthy serving of ribald comedy and pointed social criticism. The Tales endure because they are genuinely inexhaustible, each story containing another story, another layer, another door to open. They are for anyone who believes that storytelling is itself a form of magic, and that a single voice speaking into the dark can hold death at bay.
