The Black Panther of the Navaho

A weary World War I veteran seeks salvation in the red rock canyons of the American Southwest. Colonel Colvin, hollowed by trench warfare and modern mechanized death, returns home searching for something he cannot name but desperately needs. He finds it in the form of his eager son Sid and Sid's friend Scotty, two boys hungry for the wild as they embark on a hunting trip through Navajo country. The land itself becomes a character: vast, indifferent, ancient, offering both peril and the promise of renewal. As the party tracks the legendary black panther across the desert, Colonel Colvin must reconcile the violent man he became in Europe with the father he wants to be in this timeless landscape. The hunt becomes a metaphor for reclamation, for what men have always sought in wilderness: proof they are still alive, still capable of feeling something other than trauma. Written in 1921, when America's relationship with both the West and the Great War were still raw, this novel captures a specific moment in the national psyche, but its themes of fathers and sons, violence and healing, belong to every generation.
