The Black Bear

In the Bitter Root Mountains of 1910, a hunter becomes something else entirely: a foster parent. William H. Wright set out with his companions to track big game through harsh winter conditions, but fate delivered something he never expected: Ben, a young black bear cub, orphaned and vulnerable, who would reshape his journey entirely. What begins as a wildlife encounter becomes an intimate portrait of two creatures from different worlds learning to inhabit the same one. Wright documents Ben's mischievous awakening, his demands for food, his playful battles and his gradual trust with the wry eye of a man who came to shoot bears and stayed to raise one. The prose carries the unhurried cadence of early 20th century naturalism, blending field observation with the bemused affection of a reluctant caretaker. This is wilderness writing before the genre knew itself as such: no agenda, no polemic, just one man's account of a remarkable season in the mountains with a bear cub who refused to remain a footnote to his own story. The book endures because it captures something increasingly rare: the plain wonder of a human animal encountering a non-human one, neither sentimentalized nor diminished.
