The Black Bag
Philip Kirkwood's American dream has collapsed in ruins. A disaster in San Francisco has left him stranded in London, nearly penniless, with nothing but his artist's ambitions and the grim view from a shabby hotel room. When an enigmatic stranger named Calendar offers him passage home in exchange for a trifling service, Kirkwood steps into a web of intrigue he barely understands and danger he cannot yet imagine. Soon he meets Dorothy Calendar, and the mysterious propositions grow more ominous by the hour. What begins as a desperate man's lifeline becomes a descent into a world where nothing is as it seems, where danger lurks in unexpected corners, and where getting home may cost more than he knows how to pay. An early 20th-century adventure of survival, deception, and the perilous space between trust and catastrophe.
