That Awful Letter: A Comedy for Girls

Margaret, a city girl mortified by her father's insistence that she invite her country cousin for a visit, composes a letter deliberately loaded with snobbery and subtle insults. She expects Elizabeth to be deterred, or at least to arrive timid and embarrassing. Instead, Elizabeth sees through the cruelty immediately, accepts the invitation with delight, and shows up ready to play the role of the naive country cousin. But here's the twist Margaret never saw coming: Elizabeth is poised, witty, and genuinely charming, while Margaret's carefully constructed social pretensions crumble under the weight of her own rudeness. What follows is a brisk comedy of manners in which the hunter becomes the hunted, and Margaret must reckon with the fact that the girl she dismissed as unsophisticated has more grace in her little finger than Margaret has in her entire household. MacKenzie writes with a sharp, affectionate eye for the absurdity of status anxiety, and the play's real pleasure lies in watching Elizabeth navigate the social minefield with quiet confidence while Margaret sinks ever deeper into embarrassment. It's a comedy that lands its points without cruelty, and by the end, Margaret's redemption feels earned rather than imposed.
