Stories and Sketches

Harriet S. Caswell's collection opens in the salt-tinged air of American possibility, where Irish immigrant Terry Dolan trades the sod of Donegal for the scrubbed floors of someone else's home. Working as a chore boy far from everything he knew, Terry carries his sorrow like a second suitcase - and somehow, impossibly, finds dark comedy in the crossing. These stories render the immigrant experience not as simple tragedy but as something more human: messy, funny, heartbreaking, and oddly hopeful. Caswell writes with compassion and unflinching honesty about the hardships of late 19th-century life, the ache of homesickness, and the strange humor that arises when survival becomes its own form of wit. The characters in these sketches navigate a world of social expectations and personal tribulation, their resilience emerging not from grand heroism but from the small, stubborn acts of getting through another day. For readers who appreciate literary fiction that treats ordinary lives with extraordinary tenderness.
