Walter Harland: Or, Memories of the Past

In the hard farmland of Eastern Canada, thirteen-year-old Walter Harland finds himself at the mercy of Farmer Judson, a man who sees the boy as little more than another mouth to feed and a back to break. But Walter carries something Judson cannot break: a fierce love of learning, a hunger for kindness, and the memory of a home where he was once cherished. When the cruelty becomes unbearable, Walter must make a choice that will define his entire life. What follows is both a tender portrait of a child's resilience and an indictment of the casual brutality that nineteenth-century society inflicted on its most vulnerable. Through Walter's recollections, Caswell weaves a narrative that aches with longing for gentleness while celebrating the quiet rebellion of a boy who refuses to be destroyed. This is a story about what survives when everything is taken: the self, the hope, the unquenchable desire to become something more than your circumstances.
